Two different questions

Every agency audit starts in the same place: page speed, Core Web Vitals, mobile responsiveness, SEO health, accessibility compliance. These are worth checking. They answer the question "Is the site technically sound?"

The client is asking a different question: "Why aren't more visitors becoming customers?"

A site can score 95 on Lighthouse and lose every qualified buyer who lands on it. Confusing messaging, absent trust signals, and circular navigation cause no Lighthouse errors whatsoever.

The gap: Technical audits measure what the site does. Behavioural audits measure what the visitor experiences. Most agencies deliver only the first.

The limits of click data

Heatmaps show where people click. They don't record what those people were looking for, or what they felt when they didn't find it.

Heavy clicks on the navigation bar has two possible readings: people are using the nav successfully, or people are hunting for something the page should have provided. The heatmap looks identical either way.

Session recordings get closer. You can watch someone struggle. You can't watch 10,000 sessions, and you can't ask them what they were thinking. You're inferring intent from cursor movement.

The missing layer: buyer perspective

Specific buyer types arrive at a site with specific needs, anxieties, and decision criteria. Most technical audits treat all visitors as one audience.

  • A first-time visitor needs to answer: What does this company do? Is it for me? Can I trust them?
  • An executive buyer needs to answer: What's the ROI? Is this enterprise-ready?
  • A technical evaluator needs to answer: What's the architecture? What integrations exist? What are the limitations?
  • A procurement officer needs to answer: Where's the SOC 2? What's the data policy? Is there vendor lock-in?

Each visits the same site with a completely different agenda. A behavioural audit evaluates each one separately.

The deliverable that connects to revenue

Agencies that can tell a client "Your site loads fast, but your enterprise buyers don't convert because the pricing page has no compliance information and the CTA reads as self-serve" are selling something Lighthouse reports can't replicate.

That deliverable connects directly to revenue, which is the metric clients are actually tracking.

Technical vs. behavioural: side by side

  • Technical: "Page speed is 2.3s. Recommend optimising images."
  • Behavioural: "A first-time visitor can't identify what the product does within the first scroll. Purpose clarity score: 2/5."
  • Technical: "CTA button has good contrast ratio."
  • Behavioural: "The CTA says 'Get Started' with no indication of what follows. An executive evaluating a platform purchase reads 'Get Started' as a self-serve commitment and bounces."

Adding behavioural auditing

PersonaQA runs AI persona audits against any client site. Run a First-Time Customer persona to assess clarity. Run an Executive Buyer to test enterprise readiness. Run a Trust & Security Buyer before an enterprise pitch. Each run produces findings that connect observed behaviour to specific, fixable causes.

Add behavioural auditing to your agency's toolkit

Show clients what their buyers actually experience, beyond what the metrics say.
